Maximum length 100 cm. The tribe of grey mullet is a large one, but Mugil cephalus may fairly claim to be its head, since it is a species of world-wide distribution and occurs on both sides of the Atlantic, as far north as Cape Cod in the west and the Bay of Biscay in the east. On the American side it has become important as a source of frozen fillets and frozen breaded fish. On the European side it is usually marketed fresh and whole.
