Family Sebastidae
This species frequents the cold, northerly waters on both sides of the Atlantic, down to the Gulf of Maine and the North Sea. It grows slowly (over twenty years) and is found at depths of 100 to 500 metres (or even deeper). It has a close relation in shallower waters, Sebastes viviparus Krøyer, which only attains a length of 35 cm. This last species, not shown, is lusuer in Norway and Norway haddock in Britain (although this name and redfish tend to be used indiscriminately).
