REMARKS Maximum length just under 40 cm, common length 20 to 25 cm. The back is brown, often freckled. This dab, which occurs only on the European side, ranges from the White Sea down to the French coast. It is abundant in inshore waters and is fished for commercially, but with more interest on the continent than in Britain. The very name dab used to be a term of contempt in Lincolnshire.
