REMARKS Maximum length 40 cm. The sand sole has a freckled, grey-brown or yellow-brown back and is found on sandy bottoms in inshore waters from the Mediterranean to the English Channel.

Another smaller sole, which deserves a mention and is shown below, is Microchirus variegatus (Donovan), the THICKBACK SOLE, which has a similar range and reaches a length of over 20 cm. It is known as the sole panachée in France. It is proportionately thicker in the body than the Dover sole. There is also Dicologoglossa cuneata, the wedge sole, céteau in France, quite good.
