Family Penaeidae

REMARKS Maximum length of females, which grow larger than the males, is over 20 cm; usual market length 5 to 16 cm. The body is normally brownish in colour, but red, orange and green individuals occur. This species is fished from North Carolina southwards. In most years it is taken in larger quantities than any other American shrimp.

The closely related Penaeus duorarum Burkenroad, not shown because it is a more southerly species, is the pink shrimp, although it is not always pink.
