A rhizome is a fleshy horizontal plant stem that spreads below the soil surface and forms leaves above and thin roots below. Often referred to as creeping rootstalks, these stems characteristically send out roots or shoots from their nodes. This secondary sprouting stem is called a stolon. If a rhizome is separated into pieces, each piece should be able to produce a new plant. This is known as vegetative reproduction.
