rice bran Rice bran is the fibrous outer layer of the grain. When brown rice is milled to become white rice, the bran is rubbed off. Rice bran can be bought at health food stores and is an ingredient in some breakfast cereals. It is composed primarily of fiber (good for the digestion) and also contains some trace minerals and ash.
