For quick curls, soften a thick block of chocolate (6 to 8 ounces) in the microwave for about 10 seconds. Scrape a vegetable peeler firmly down one side of the block to form a curl. Place the curls on a plate and refrigerate them until firm enough to handle.

For chocolate shards, line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Spread melted chocolate into a thin layer over the parchment. Allow the chocolate to harden. Peel the chocolate from the parchment and break it into irregular shards. Place the shards on a plate and refrigerate them until they are firm enough to handle.
