Methylcellulose (MC), hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC), hydroxypropylcellulose (HPC), and carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) are all derivatives of Methocel.

MC and HPMC are the most widely used; HPC and CMC are seldom used and will not be elaborated upon. Methocel is used for gelling, sheet forming (โ€œpaperโ€;), and as an aerator that helps liquids take in air more readily. It forms thermo-reversible gels with a variety of textures from brittle (crisp) to soft.

There are five categories of Methocel, and within these there are different viscosities (19 total). The five categories are:
