Pine nuts are indigenous to China, although the more plump and sweet sort from Korea was an early import. Strewn on special tea cakes or dipped in honey and then fried as a special nibble, pine nuts are also a feature of eastern Chinese cuisine, where they are used to garnish fish and poultry dishes.
I much prefer the smaller, round-tipped Mediterranean pine nuts to the larger, triangular variety presently imported from Taiwan. The European sort is rich and sweet, whereas the other tastes grassy.
