Cool crisp weather always starts us dreaming of pears. A perfectly ripe pear is sheer ambrosia. The perfume is ethereal, the flesh buttery and melting, and there is enough fruit and juice to quench a thirst.
There are more than 5,000 varieties of pears, but just a dozen or so are available nationwide. Pears are not all pear shaped. Some are round and plump, others are perfect bells, and still others are as chubby and knobby as fists. Most pears in our markets are grown in the Northwest and are harvested in September and October. They are then put into cold storage and shipped from winter through late spring.
