  • About

Kohlrabi, BRASSICA OLERACEA var. GONGYLODES, belongs to the cabbage family but appears here because it is the swollen root which is usually eaten, rather than the leaves, as with the other family members.

Another swollen root which is eaten is the Chinese (or oriental or giant) radish, houa phak pheuk in Lao, RAPHANUS SATIVUS var. LONGIPINNATUS to the scientist. It has become a sufficiently familiar sight in oriental grocery stores to need no illustration here. However, what are less familiar are the seed pods which form on the plant if it is not dug up. The tender young pods, shown on the right, are eaten in Laos as mak phak poom, with the hard tips cut off.
