The scientific names of these mushrooms are hopeless. The fluctuating genera—Clitocybe, Lepista, and Tricholoma (and even more mix-and-match species)—have been changed so many times in recent decades that mycologists usually refer to the mushrooms by their common name, blewit, which has stuck for hundreds of years. Bluefoot, an American marketing name, is a direct translation of the French pied bleu; blewit is conjectured to be a contraction of “blue hat” or a corruption of the French bleuet (cornflower).
