Buzet, archetypically Gascon red wine appellation in south west france up the Garonne River from bordeaux energetically producing notably bordeaux-like wines. The recent history of the appellation, created in 1973, is inextricably intertwined with the dynamism of the local co-operative, Les Vignerons de Buzet, which makes all but a tiny proportion of Buzet. Notably ambitious, the co-operative laid the foundation stones of a barrel-ageing cellar in 1958, and has its own cooper. Thus, the average Buzet is given much more sophisticated élevage than the average bordeaux aoc, without an enormous price differential.
