Some medical research suggests that wine may be drunk for dietary reasons. Wine contains various vitamins and minerals but in such small concentrations that, for them to make any sufficient contribution to the human diet, excessive amounts of alcohol would also have to be ingested. ‘Moderate’ wine consumption has been shown to have a beneficial effect for several medical conditions, however, and wine consumption clearly plays a part in the much-vaunted Mediterranean diet (see health).

No wine is ‘slimming’, but dry dealcoholized wine is usually lower in calories than most.
