microbes or micro-organisms, extremely small living beings, a few of which are capable of causing vine diseases and fermentation. Those affecting wines and vines are usually referred to as yeasts and bacteria. Microbiology is the study of such micro-organisms, which need micronutrients as well as nutrients for growth.
