Pierrevert, zone in the alpine foothills of northern provence, regarded by the inao as an eastern satellite of the southern rhône, promoted to aoc status in 1998. The appellation extends over a large area east of the luberon and includes some of the highest vineyards in France. The total vineyard area was 236 ha/583 acres in 2012. Wines of all three colours are produced with rosé the most important. Thanks to the relative harshness of the climate, they are usually marked more by acidity than body. Grenache and Syrah are the dominant grapes. Tourism in the Hautes Alpes de Provence is such that there has been little need to seek export markets.
