Other materials used include concrete, steel, and plastic. Woods used for such posts are soft woods such as pine, treated to withstand insect and fungus attack, or naturally resistant hardwoods. A common spacing of about 6 m/20 ft between posts is close enough to stop the wire sagging. Smaller-diameter posts placed one beside each vine are called stakes and these are more common for Old World vineyards but also found in California.
