world production, of wine is concentrated in two bands of generally temperate to mediterranean climate in each hemisphere, as shown on the map on p. 822. tropical viticulture is becoming increasingly common but so far on a small scale relative to the established wine-producing countries.

Total production of wine is affected by each year’s weather (particularly by frost, poor fruit set, or hail, particularly but not exclusively within Europe), by the effects of vine pull schemes, offset by those of new plantings. The underlying trend is downwards, largely because of determined efforts by the eu to reduce its wine surplus .
