The greatest compliment a neighborhood bakery can receive from a customer is a request for a recipe. It means we’ve become a part of people’s lives, their friends. It isn’t unusual for us to hear, “This is fantastic. Can I have the recipe?” or “Is this cake easy to make? I want to make one for my grandmother’s birthday.” We’ve always done our best to provide recipes to those who asked, but most of them had not been written with the home baker in mind. (Unless, of course, the home baker was interested in making 12 cakes at a time or 128 marshmallows or 16 loaves of quickbread.)
