To make lifting and turning easier the traditional implement was a bannock-spade, a long handled implement with a heart-shaped spade at the end. Modern spatulas tend to be thin and long and not a convenient shape, but a good quality paint-stripping knife with a supple blade of about four inches across is an ideal substitute.
