Post-Reformation Scotland largely abandoned the Christ’s mass and everything connected with the Roman church, though there were several areas that remained faithful to the Catholic church. It was not until the middle of the twentieth century that Christmas, both secular and sacred, was fully revived in Scotland. Until the 1960s, most people in the Highlands went to work on Christmas Day. Now Scotland has the best of both worlds with a two-week, mid-winter festive holiday stretching from Christmas through to Hogmanay.
