In the pre-Aryan days (before 1500 B.C.), everyone in India ate meats freely, from over 250 kinds of animals. It’s only with the arrival of the Aryans, and their beliefs as described in the holy scriptures of the Hindus known as the Vedas, that certain meats become forbidden. Vegetarianism played a big role, especially among the Hindu Brahmins, but other castes and religions continued to eat meats. Specific meats were taboo in some religions, but the one that defied all prohibitions was the chicken, in all its forms and glory (except the cluck perhaps). Its wide availability and easy-to-raise qualities make chicken, even in modern times, the most sought-after meat.
