  • About
By the time we had packed up the gear and returned it to the store, it was half past three, and the hotel kitchen was shut. So we decided to drive along the coast to a small fishing village called Marang. It is a busy port but terribly difficult to enter because of a system of low-lying sandbanks at the mouth of the river. There is spectacular surf where the ocean hits the harbour entrance. Once boats are over the bar, everything is okay, because the harbour has deep water. The harbour is jammed with beautiful old wooden fishing boats painted in pale blues, lime greens, ochres and pinks, all with swept-up pointed bows designed to cope with the vagaries of the South China Sea.
