Bacteria are tiny single-cell organisms found pretty much everywhere. We believe that bacteria were the very first form of life here on earth and they thrive in diverse environments – the soil, in water, and also in humans. Bacteria come in many forms and can be distinguished by their different cell walls, their shape, or genetic makeup. Bacteria, like all other living organisms, need nutrients and water to survive. They can be aerobic, which means they need oxygen to survive, or anaerobic, when they do not need oxygen to survive. Some, facultative anaerobic bacteria, can live both with and without oxygen.
