Notes on Using this Companion

This Companion has been written with the intention that browsing through it should be a pleasure. However, most readers are likely to use it in the first instance for looking up a particular topic.

To look something up, the first step, is to see if it is an entry. The 2,717 entry headwords, printed so that they stand out clearly on the page, are in alphabetical sequence. (Note that spaces between words are ignored, so that aardvark comes before à la.)

If there is no entry on a particular topic, but it is covered within another entry, there may be a ‘signpost‘ entry in the alphabetical sequence which will direct the reader to the entry in which the topic is covered.
