A toasted sandwich may begin as a simple sandwich, a hollowed long roll sandwich, or an open-face sandwich. Most include some type of cheese. To make a toasted sandwich, the bread product is spread and the filling ingredients are added to the open bread product. The sandwich is then heated in a countertop oven. Once the sandwich filling is hot and the cheese is melted, raw garnishes, such as lettuce and tomato, are added, and then, in most cases, the sandwich is closed.
