Modern food bars are self-contained units equipped with everything needed to display self-service foods attractively and safely. Food bars range from small, semiportable units 6 feet in length to huge built-in bars extending for many yards. Manufacturers offer modular fittings that can be used to convert their food bars to different uses. For example, food bars in restaurants are fitted with plate holders, while food bars in supermarkets have racks that hold take-out containers.
All food bars are designed with features that protect food from public contamination. The most visible form of protection is sneeze guards. A sneeze guard is a clear Plexiglas® panel suspended over or in front of the food display to protect it. Some food bars have additional food covers, primarily for hot foods.
