Let’s assume you have an espresso machine: place freshly ground coffee in the basket of your portafilter then tamp firmly and evenly (preferably with a tamper) until the coffee pushes back. This produces a firm ‘puck’ of grounds for extraction. A nicely weighted tamper feels great in the hand and is worth the investment.
