  • About
In the melting pot culture of Hawaii, it hasn’t taken long for the Hakka to assimilate. You can see it in Kelley Oshiro’s face—a melding of Swedish, English, and Asian features. You might not even know she has Chinese roots until she talks about her Hakka grandmother, Yun Tsin.

“Yun Tsin was the matriarch in the family,” says Kelley in Honolulu. “She was such a strong woman. Everyone gathered around her.” She was such a force, in fact, that she served as the inspiration for the character of Wu Chow’s Auntie, Nyuk Tsin, in James A. Michener’s best seller Hawaii.
