One of the hangovers of the hostess-trolley age is the idea that the clever cook has a secret vinaigrette recipe which can transform the dullest lettuce into a Sensational Salad. I’m not sure I even have a regular vinaigrette recipe, let alone one with a winning, magic ingredient.
