Fruit preserves (murabbas) of mango and carrot are popular desserts, particularly in villages or small towns in India as there are no facilities for purchasing ready-made sweets. Apple and Varanasi Amla are some of the other fruits preserved. They are used not only as desserts but also have the reputation of household remedies for strengthening the heart muscle.
Anything sugared is very much welcomed in India. Jams and jellies which in fact were introduced into this country by the British have become progressively popular because they are comparatively less sweet and have a slightly sour taste.
