After training as a wine merchant in London for 10 years, I moved back to my family’s home in Yorkshire. I knew the area well, so ended up working for Yorkshire Fine Wines, covering the North Yorkshire ‘patch’, which included the beautiful Yorkshire Moors.

A good customer of mine The Mallyan Spout Hotel, in Goathland, in the depths of ‘Heartbeat’ country, was owned by the Heslop family. I used to organise gourmet dinners at the hotel, where I’d discuss wine, and Brian Turner (pre-TV fame) would do the food bit. It was Peter Heslop, along with Bill Symonds (the actor and big foodie) who visited The Milburn Arms in Rosedale one day, and told me about the young couple there, and how good their food was.
