Many of Macedonia’s classic desserts are heavily influenced by the legacy of the Ottoman Empire. Honey, nuts, orange, and cinnamon are common flavorings. Macedonian sweets are not very complicated to make, and generally go very well with slivovitz (plum brandy), or planenski chai (mountain tea), a robust chamomile-like tea sourced from the mountains of Macedonia.
