  • About
The Macedonian culture is rich and deeply rooted in tradition with a charming tapestry of music, dance, dress, celebrations, rituals, and food. With so many different cities and villages, it is only natural that there are different approaches and variances to the customs and traditions. Each city or village collectively shared in the same core traditions but often with slightly different approaches.

My interpretation of the culture is based on the small villages my parents are from. Even though they were neighboring villages and only about six kilometers away from each other, there were quite distinct differences in their dialect, way of dressing, and technical skill sets. For example, my mother’s village was a little more modern and the common trade was stone masonry, whereas my father’s village was much more agriculturally guided. The majority of Macedonians are Christian Orthodox. Although there are many other religions being practiced, Orthodox Christianity remains the main religion of Macedonians. I touch on this because religious celebrations are deeply woven throughout the culture. Weddings, births, baptisms, and funerals are milestones in many cultures and specific foods are prepared for each. For example, at weddings a very large ornate round bread called Pogacha (Braided Rich Bread) is made and decorated with braided dough and sesame seeds. After the ceremony, the bride and groom each hold one end of the bread and tear it apart. Whoever tears off the largest piece is meant to “rule the household.” The bread is then portioned out and each guest at the wedding must have a piece for good luck.
