Which wines need decanting?

  • About
It follows from the above that the only wines you need to decant are those which have spent a long time in the bottle. This includes top-class red Bordeaux and Cabernet Sauvignons, red Rhônes, Shiraz, red Burgundies, Barolos and other top Italian reds and vintage port.
If you want to check if the wine has thrown a deposit, hold the bottle up against a light source: if there’s a dark stain on the inside of the glass where the bottle has been lying down, then it has thrown a deposit. Alternatively, you may see dark particles at the bottom of the wine.
