The order Perciformes, to which we now come, is a very large one indeed and our survey of it will continue as far as page 144. The common feature of fish in this order is some degree of structural resemblance to the perch, manifest in the position and spininess of fins and other such details. We begin by examining one of the most important families in the order, that which includes the sea basses and the groupers.

The sea bass, well-known in France as the bar or loup de mer, is fairly common on the southern and western coasts of England and the southern coast of Ireland. The same species does not occur in North American waters, but there are several related species there, mostly with the word bass in their common names.
