  • About

The family Scombridae. The species listed here belong to the so-called ‘blue’ fish, whose flesh is so to speak meatier than that of most fish, and with a higher oil content.

These are oceanic fish, tending to swim in shoals and to perform impressive migrations. As a group these fish, and the tunas which follow in the next section of the catalogue, are found in the surface waters of all the tropical and temperate oceans of the world. They are of considerable commercial importance. Of the four species listed the first three are present in both North American and British waters.
