We shall now consider the Mediterranean representatives of three families; Stromateidae, Blenniidae and Gobiidae.

The pomfret of the Mediterranean is a rather disappointing fish. It is in the Indo-Pacific area that the family Stromateidae achieves deserved renown by virtue of the excellence of the white pomfret and the black pomfret, which are among the most prized marine fish in the region. The butterfish which represent the family in the north-west Atlantic are also better than their Mediterranean relation. The family is absent from northern European waters.
