Mile 20 - Learning and teaching

The Tulbagh had agreed to send me to college but when the time came for me to go, they missed the deadline for enrolment. I would have had to wait for the next year’s intake. Manfred took pity on me and told me about an international chef who was opening a restaurant at the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront in Cape Town. They were advertising for personnel. Manfred had not only given me my first chance to cook but my second as well. Thus, began my relationship with the fiery and talented Bill Stafford.
