“Let us have a sweet dish, let us indulge in sweet talk.”

Turkish Proverb

Turkish cuisine is rich in desserts and sweets. From the cradle to the grave, Turks insist on a sweet to mark any occasion. This custom is carried so far that, traditional anniversaries apart, someone starting a new job would mark the occasion by presenting sweets to relatives, friends and colleagues; the arrival of a friend from distant parts would be celebrated by exchanging gifts of sweets; someone moving into a new house would entertain neighbours with a sweet dish; and a gift for a friend would always include a box of sweets. So it goes on, and in Turkey there is always an excuse to have something sweet.
