Under this heading I give various pieces of information, including almost always maximum length and colour.

It is usual to measure the length of a fish from its snout to the base of its tail fin, as shown in the diagrammatic drawing below. This is the method which I have tried to follow in giving maximum and normal lengths. But some writers in the past have included projections such as the tail fin at the rear and the sword of the swordfish at the front. Some measurements of this kind may have crept into my text.
