Of the three fish listed under this uncomplimentary title, the first belongs to the Order Lophiiformes and the others to the Order Tetraodontiformes. All three have extraordinary characteristics, which cannot be said to affect their flavour but which may still invest the act of eating them with additional pleasure and interest.

The angler-fish is a master of camouflage, concealing itself on the sea bed in a manner well described by the Duke of Argyll (quoted by Goode, who omits to say which Duke):
