  • About

Sweden, for me, is first of all the country to which Linnaeus belonged, where he devised the binomial system of nomenclature for animals and plants, without which this or any similar book would represent the sort of chaos which only William Blake or Lewis Carroll could express. My Swedish shrines are therefore Uppsala, where Linnaeus’s house is still preserved and still permeated by his scholarly and amiable personality, and Öland, the island where he did much of his work on the Swedish fauna and flora.
