We returned from Afghanistan to Australia with a deeper understanding of how our worlds and cultures fit together. We had learnt that time and place had a big influence on what could be created. If those inside Afghanistan were still making objects of beauty and preserving their heritage in creative ways while bombs and blasts exploded overhead, then oceans away in Australia, almost three decades since we had left Afghanistan, we could also contribute to the human story of our times through creativity and food – but it would be expressed and have significance in different ways.
