The easiest way to begin using a starter is to take a piece of someone else’s and feed it. A glass jar or a plastic container and a scale are all you need. I recommend feeding one part starter with one part flour and one part water. King Arthur all-purpose flour is great because it’s inexpensive, widely available, and malted. That malted barley provides yeast a little extra food and makes things more foolproof.
