I majored in molecular biology in college, but I also studied graphic design, because I had been drawn to fine arts since childhood. My passion for both science and fine arts is what drew me to a career as a physician; I saw these two disciplines work in harmony in the medical field. I appreciate this even more as a physician practicing internal medicine, since treating patients isnât always an exact science. It requires finesse and nuance that only comes with experience. I find this is particularly true since, as itâs often said in health care, patients donât read the medical textbooksâthey often present differently than the way weâre taught in the classroom. Thereâs much more art than science involved in patient communication and education, which is imperative to being a successful physician. Thatâs one of the things I love the most about practicing medicine.
