Pork is the most typical meat used in ramen, and the fattier cuts such as belly pork (or neck) are used to impart richness to the broth.

The toppings will transform a bowl of ramen into a well-balanced dish, providing substance, flavour, texture and, of course, nutrition. The combinations are many and varied, although some ingredients appear with more frequency than others, such as pork, eggs, spring onions or scallions, sesame seeds, and chilli.
