One of my favourite spots in Brixton Village is Etta’s Seafood Kitchen. Behind the cheery hand-painted purple frontage, it is just like sitting in someone’s homely kitchen while they cook for you. A family affair featuring the eponymous Etta Burrell, her cousin Carole and her daughter Cheryl, you can bring your own wine and beer and watch the food being prepared as you chat. Often the seafood is so fresh you see it coming in from the stalls in the market when they are busy.
Etta’s was one of the first places to open when Brixton Village got its new lease of life. Etta had always cooked, mainly for film crews as well as family and friends, but had never thought to open a restaurant until she came to the market on an impulse. The market manager asked her for a business plan and Etta just knew she would be cooking in Brixton.
