This stall, run by the ever-present Phil, is especially noticeable for its hand-painted sign and the extensive selection of yams and cassava which are all lined up, just waiting for you to try them all. Roots, tubers and starchy vegetables of all kinds are specialities here, from those yams to breadfruit and parsnips.
Tucked in between the Brixton Party Shop and Ilias’ Fish, Phil supplies many of the restaurants in the Village and from his excellent vantage point seems to know everyone and everything in Brixton Village. I often nip here to stock up on starches and carbs while waiting for my fish to be cleaned and prepared at Ilias’. I can quite often do both from the same queue and who doesn’t like multitasking when shopping? It’s all part of the service when you shop at independent stores...
